On 1–8 June, Churches of Christ across Australia united for National Prayer Week – a dedicated time to seek God’s direction, presence, and awakening in our churches, communities, and personal lives.
This year’s theme, “Seek First,” drew inspiration from Matthew 6:33 (NIV):
“Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Churches participated in diverse and creative ways – from daily prayer gatherings and fasting to engagement on social media and messaging platforms with prayer prompts and campaign videos.
At Missionsheart Church in the ACT, Prayer Coordinator and Leadership Community Chair Jenny Foster reflected on the experience: “It was a great opportunity to join with Churches of Christ throughout Australia in prayer. Seeking first the kingdom of God really resonated with us—we felt it was a Kairos verse. Over 20 people from our community chose to pray and fast during the week. We appreciated the video testimonies focused on God’s heart for the lost. We’d love to be involved again.”
In Broken Hill, the timing of National Prayer Week coincided with the church’s annual church camp. Mark Curtis shared how they brought the campaign into their weekend experience: “During camp, we divided into four teams. On Saturday, we prepared ten written prayers so everyone had something to pray aloud. On Sunday, each person chose a point from the prayer focus to write their own prayer. It helped those who don’t feel confident praying publicly to engage and learn more about praying together.”
Reports of similar participation came from every state, with over 2,500 people engaging with the campaign webpage and resources, and many churches expressing interest in participating again.
As Mark summed up:
“Hopefully the effect of the week has rippled across our churches and set the scene for God to show up – we just need to be watching expectantly for His movement.”
Did your church participate in National Prayer Week?
We’d love to hear your story and any feedback for next year.
