Position Description and Selection Criteria
The Senior Pastor of Marion Church of Christ provides the spiritual and pastoral leadership to our multi-generational church, and leads us in our desire to grow in discipleship of Jesus and to serve and reach out to our local community. Marion Church of Christ has a wide range of ministries and programs to help people of all ages engage with our mission of Discovering Jesus, Valuing People and Building Community. Further, we intentionally reach out to our local community as part of our mission and work closely in the fulfilment of this vision with MarionLIFE Inc which is separately incorporated mission partner. The Senior Pastor leads us through personal example, preaching and teaching, equipping and training, and inspiring us to be the people of God in our community.
We are looking for someone who is excited about leading our church in a season of growth, who deeply aligns with our mission and is willing to work collaboratively with others in doing so.
The Senior Pastor
- Is appointed by the church on the recommendation of the Search Committee and Governing Council.
- Is empowered by the delegated authority of the Governing Council to lead the ministry of Marion Church of Christ on the basis of our shared vision, values and agreed priorities.
- Is accountable to the Governing Council and provided with a formative review annually.
- Senior Pastor role to be a full-time, two-year contract with KPIs linked to church growth.
Key elements of the Position and Selection Criteria
1. God called
There should be a discerned sense of call to serve God through leading Marion Church of Christ in its vision and mission of Discovering Jesus, Valuing People and Building Community. There needs to be a sense of joint discernment for the Pastor, Pastor’s family, Search Committee, Governing Council and the Church that this is a call from God and this is a good pastor/church fit.
2. Directional leadership
The Senior Pastor of MCC will be a leader able to cultivate and drive a shared vision that is focused on the growth and development of the church, in various capacities. Particularly aligning as the church seeks to build meaningful connections with young adults and young families. This role includes:
- Working with the Governing Council, Associate Pastors, ministry leaders and church body to determine God’s vision for the Pastors’ and Church’s current ministries
- The ability to communicate this vision to others – inspiring people to commitment and action
- The ability to develop strategies which enable implementation of the vision.
3. Team Leadership
The Senior Pastor of MCC is the team leader for our Associate Pastors, staff and ministry leaders. Collaborative in style, effective team leadership will involve meeting regularly with the team as a whole and with Associate Pastors and staff personally; clarifying roles, supporting and equipping leaders, keeping the team aligned and focused as well as providing regular assessments of performance.
4. Gifted Preaching and Bible Teaching
The Senior Pastor will lead the preaching and teaching program of MCC. In partnership with the Associate Pastors, the Senior Pastor works out the teaching program of MCC and with them integrates teaching themes including the worship and the Life Groups’ program. It is expected that the Senior Pastor will carry around 70% of the preaching and teaching and around 30% will be shared with other pastors and gifted preachers and teachers. The Senior Pastor will not only love and live out the Word of God, but also love teaching it with creativity and conviction. S/he will be a good communicator in accurately relating biblical truth to contemporary culture in meaningful and relevant ways. The Senior Pastor will be capable of connecting the Word with multiple generations, including younger members, in a rapidly changing society and a biblically grounded yet forward-thinking pastor who holds deep spiritual wisdom while engaging meaningfully with the realities of modern life.
5. Equipping, training, encouraging and mentoring others into ministry
The Senior Pastor of MCC will be a trainer, supporter, equipper and mentor of others to evangelise and have active involvement in ministry. MCC has a long history of high levels of church and community involvement. The Senior Pastor develops the gifts and abilities of others to serve – encouraging and supporting them in their ministries. This role includes:
- Equipping and encouraging people willingly serving God in the church and community.
- Assisting people to find their gifts and empowering them to serve.
- Fostering opportunities for outreach and evangelism as a church body
6. Pastoral Care and Community Connection
The Senior Pastor will oversee the pastoral care ministries of the church and also support and direct the community service programs and ministries of MCC. While primarily providing pastoral oversight and strategic direction, it is anticipated that the Senior Pastor will be personally involved in some pastoral situations and a small number of community programs on the basis of gifts and skills.
Essential Attributes
- Baptised believer displaying the fruits of the Spirit.
- Willingness to adopt the doctrines and practices of Churches of Christ.
- Proven ministry experience of at least five years in a paid ministry role, senior leadership experience and relevant education an advantage.
- Team player with strong leadership and communication skills.
- Strong management skills.
- Energetic, resourceful and innovative in ministry as well as leadership development.
- Time management and networking skills.
- Skilled in translating and transferring biblical truths and knowledge into kind and understanding work alongside community.
Desirable Attributes
- Graduate of a recognised Theological College.
- Experience in conducting baptisms, weddings and funerals.
- Experience in Church building programs or development
- Experience in and knowledge of HR, legal compliance and policy management
- Knowledge of business management processes
